Online dating isn’t a bad idea in the big city, where there are singles, singles everywhere but not a date to meet.

But in the desert, with our special mix of ages and sexual orientations, a searchable database makes only too much sense.

After talking to people in the biz and my favorite online daters, I’ve put together some tips for finding a catch online.

The site

• Pay. On an unpaid site, anyone can create profiles as jokes or with fake personas. On a paid site, people are much more likely to write back to messages and be who they say they are — after all, they signed up with a credit card.

• Search for a free trial. Most sites offer a week or two of free matches either by design or with a special offer code that a Google search will help you find. The biggest sites are eHarmony and match.com, meaning they’ll have the biggest pool to search. If you find a smaller site that speaks to you, use your free trial to learn how many people are using the site in your area.

The profile

• Be yourself. You want someone who will fall for you, so why be someone else at the start? Worse, why be everyone else? If your profile reads too generic (you like music, think “Saturday Night Live” used to be funnier), people learn only one thing about you: you’re uninventive.
